I was slightly intimidated to begin coaching youth hockey this year, however, I really want to take part in the fun, growth and development of my son (age 4). I'm much more "qualified" to coach baseball or golf than I am hockey. After all, the only real organized hockey I've participated in was roller hockey at the age of 33. So, I've been rather intimidated to instruct kids on specific mechanics like, how to hockey stop on ice. I can barely get it done myself. Well, many of my fears were overcome as I was comforted at the Level 1 Coaches Clinic in Livonia through USA hockey. It was a really great introduction to coaching hockey.
Maybe its good that I don't know so much. I think I can learn along with the kids (mini mites). I mean, because I don't know much, it seems easy to focus on the "fun" in the game. Age appropriate drills that focus on skill development in the early years follows the ADM. I'm really looking forward to creating an environment where the kids have FUN, learn skills, and fall in love with the game of hockey.
I take the position very seriously. However, I think I stand to learn alot from this experience. Being a role model is a tall order to live up to. Hockey is about more than what happens on the ice. Sports, in general, is a great metaphor for life and can provide experiences that translate to how we should handle ourselves with authorities and others. Its about self awareness in the context of others along with many other life skills. What a blast this year will be, full of challenges for me and the boys!
I can't wait.
